As the New Year rolls in, it’s easy to feel the pressure to make sweeping resolutions. Promises to ‘overhaul your lifestyle’, ‘eat clean’, or ‘get fit' are shouted from every magazine cover and social media post.

But let’s be honest: how often do these big, bold resolutions stick? By February, life creeps back in, and those ambitious plans often fall by the wayside.

Here’s the truth: lasting change doesn’t happen overnight—it happens with small, meaningful steps.

So, if you’re feeling stuck, uninspired, or simply unsure where to start, this New Year, consider this mantra: if you change nothing, nothing will change. But remember, change doesn’t have to mean flipping your life upside down. In fact, the most powerful transformations often start with the tiniest adjustments.

Feeling Stuck? You’re Not Alone

Many of us begin January feeling a little worn out—tired from the busyness of the festive season and weighed down by habits or routines that no longer serve us.

Perhaps you:

  • Feel stuck in an unfulfilling job, counting down to the weekend only to feel too exhausted to enjoy it.

  • Wake up each day feeling flat, unmotivated, or overwhelmed by the thought of making changes.

  • Know deep down that things could be better but feel paralysed by fear, doubt, or the sheer enormity of it all.

Sound familiar? The good news is, change is possible, and you don’t have to go all-in to make a meaningful difference.

Why Do We Resist Change?

Before we explore how to create positive change, it’s helpful to understand why it can feel so hard to get started.

  1. Fear of the Unknown

Change often involves stepping into uncertainty, and as humans, we crave the comfort of the familiar—even if it’s not making us happy.

  2. All-or-Nothing Thinking

Many people believe that change must be dramatic or “perfect” to count. This mindset creates unnecessary pressure and can stop you before you even begin.

  3. Overwhelm

When the path ahead feels too big or too complicated, it’s tempting to stay put. Thoughts like “I have to lose three stone” or “I need to completely change my career” can leave you paralysed.

  4. Self-Doubt

You might think, “I’ve tried before and failed,” or “What if I don’t have what it takes?” These thoughts are powerful blockers to making progress.

But what if, this New Year, you took a gentler approach? Instead of grand resolutions, you could commit to just one small change—a step towards a life that feels happier, healthier, and more balanced.

Why should you start small with change?

Here’s the secret: small, consistent steps add up to big results.

Starting small helps you:

  • Avoid overwhelm and stay motivated.

  • Build confidence as you experience early wins.

  • Create habits that actually stick because they fit into your life.

This approach is sustainable, empowering, and far more likely to lead to long-term success than trying to do everything all at once.

How a Health and Wellbeing Coach Can Help

As a health and wellbeing coach working with women in midlife, I’ve seen how small, focused changes can transform lives—especially when you have the right support. Here’s how I can help you start your journey this New Year.

1. Defining Your Vision for 2025

It’s hard to make changes if you don’t know what you’re aiming for. Coaching helps you create a clear and exciting vision for your future.

Ask yourself:

  • How do I want to feel by this time next year?

  • What would a healthier, happier version of me look like?

  • What’s one thing I’d love to be able to do but can’t right now?

Once you know where you’re headed, we can map out a simple, achievable plan to get you there.

2. Starting Small for Big Impact

Change doesn’t have to be dramatic to be effective. In fact, focusing on just one or two small adjustments can be life-changing.

For example:

  • Instead of “I need to lose weight,” we might start with adding more vegetables to your meals or walking for 10 minutes each day.

  • If your job feels draining, we could explore ways to bring more joy or balance into your current routine before considering bigger career moves.

By starting small, you’ll feel empowered rather than overwhelmed—and you’ll begin to see results without upending your life.

3. Providing Accountability and Encouragement

We’ve all been there: you set a goal, life gets busy, and before you know it, you’re back to square one. Coaching keeps you on track with regular check-ins and personalised support.

Having someone to cheer you on, celebrate your wins (no matter how small!), and help you navigate challenges makes all the difference.

4. Identifying and Overcoming Barriers

Often, it’s not the practical steps that hold us back but the mental ones—like fear, self-doubt, or unhelpful beliefs. A coach helps you uncover and work through these barriers so you can move forward with confidence.

5. Celebrating Progress Along the Way

Too often, we focus solely on the end goal and forget to acknowledge how far we’ve come. Coaching helps you celebrate each milestone, keeping you motivated and inspired to keep going.

A New Year, a New Opportunity

Let’s say your goal for the New Year is to have more energy. Together, we might:

  • Start by tweaking your morning routine to include a nourishing breakfast and 5 minutes of stretching.

  • Gradually add in more energising habits, like drinking more water or taking short breaks throughout the day.

  • Reflect on how these small changes improve your mood, energy, and focus, adjusting as needed.

By the end of the year, these little shifts can snowball into a complete transformation—all without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out.

Ask Yourself: What’s Stopping Me?

This January, take a moment to reflect:

  • What’s holding me back from making a change?

  • What could my life look like by next December if I started today?

  • What’s one small, manageable step I can take right now?
